Introduction

The National School of Drama is one of the foremost theatre training institutions in the world and the only one of its kind in India. It was set up by the Sangeet Natak Akademi as one of its constituent units in 1959. In 1975, it became an independent entity and was registered as an autonomous organization under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, fully financed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. As a part of their training, students are required to produce plays which are then performed before the public. The systematic study and practical performing experience of Sanskrit drama, modern Indian drama, traditional Indian theatre forms, Asian drama and western dramatic protocols give the students a solid grounding and a wide perspective in the art of theatre. The School’s Library is one of the country’s most specialized libraries in the field of theatre and drama. By the end of March 2019, the library owned an enormous collection of 31,128 books. Subjects covered under the dramatics are: plays in all modern Indian languages, Sanskrit, Hindi and English, criticism on plays and playwrights, history and criticism of theatre in India and world. The technical subjects covered are: Play Direction ( Production), Acting and Movements, Voice and Speech training, Stage design, Lighting and Makeup, Theatre Architecture, Designing of Stage costume- Indian and Western. Related fields of the dramatics such as: Music, dance, ballet and opera (Indian and Western), Yoga and Physical education, Film, Television and Radio technique, Design and Graphics, Photography, Fine Arts, Social and Cultural History and Anthropology, Religion and Philosophy, Furniture and Interior Decoration, Children plays, fiction, poems and school community theatre books. Textbooks such as: Hindi and English plays (Indian and Western), Hindi and English Novel (Indian and Western), Biography and Actor Biography, Poems (Indian, Sanskrit) Indian Literature. Books are not the only means of information available today but other sources like theatre journals and periodicals, reports in English and Hindi, newspapers clippings of Bharat Rang Mahotsav, Jashnebachpan and Bal Sangam of NSD, bibliography details from library software are available.
