The Sherab Gyasched Tsal (shes-rab rGyas-byed tshal) library of the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (Deemed to be University) is a soul-nourishing place for people of any age and a natural focal point for the meeting of minds. The library is a vital organ of the institute not only for the students and teachers but other members of the institute also depend upon it for seeking information and wisdom. The library is one of the biggest libraries in the entire Himalayan region disseminating knowledge in Buddhist studies, Tibetology, Ladakh studies and various other subjects. The library has been computerised by installing the Slim Thunmi software. There are three sections of the library, i.e., 1) General Section 2) Sungbum/Tibetan section and 3) Reference Section. The total collection of 30,368 books in Tibetan, English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Pali and Urdu comprises books on religion, history, philosophy, literature, language, political science, sociology, sports, computer studies and Tibetan medicine etc. The library has a comprehensive reference section containing encyclopaedias, dictionaries and yearbooks. The library subscribes to 14 foreign and 30 Indian research journals/periodicals, 25 magazines and 12 newspapers in different languages. The institute also welcomes students, researchers and people who are passionate about reading books and accessing references.
