Description: The state of Bihar is well known for production of ’Makhana’, which is mostly found in Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Purnia and Katihar districts of Bihar. The seed of Makhana popularly known as ‘Gudi’ is a water plant product cultivated in lakes, ponds and wet lands. This traditional technology object is collected from Madhubani of Bihar still practiced by the Mallah community of the area. Gudi is collected from the lake and ponds and dried in the sun and after the seed of the ‘Gudi’ is extracted. The well dried gudi is roasted in an iron pan & then hammered on a wooden platform to get the Makhana. In this process ‘Ganj’ ‘Akka’ ‘Lohiya’ ‘Pirkath’ ‘Pitra’ & ‘Deli’ are the important tools used.
