Description:

The video is about Kutiyattam, a form of Sanskrit theatre of Kerala. It is considered to be one of the oldest living traditions in India. The Kutiyattam combines the ancient Sanskrit theatre with the Koothu, a folk art tradition of the Tamil country. It is traditionally performed in temple theatres called the Koothambalams. Purification rituals take place before the performance and an oil lamp is placed on stage to denote divine presence. The term Kutiyattam means to play or perform together. A complete Kuttiyatam performance can last upto 40 days. Kuttiyattam is customarily performed by actors from the Chakyar and Nangiar communities. The male actors from the Chakyar community transmit highly detailed performance manuals from master to pupil. The performance relies on facial expressions, especially with the eyes, bodily movement and gesture. The performance is accompanied by percussion instruments like the mizhavu, kuzhitalam, edakka, kurumkuzhal and sankhu all of which are played by musicians from the Nambiar caste.
