The video is an edited compilation of recordings from the archives of the Sangeet Natak Akademi on the different forms of the Chhau dance. Chhau is a dance form or dance drama, prevalent in eastern India. The three recognized styles of Chhau are: Purulia from West Bengal, Seraikela from Jharkhand and Mayurbhanj from Orissa. It is based on martial arts and involves energetic and powerful movements. Chhau is performed by male dancers while singing. The Mayurbhanj Chhau shows its martial character more clearly as some of its themes include hunters' dances, animal movements and weapon worship. The origin of this Chhau is in the Aam Daliya Jaam Daliya Naach performed at the remote villages. Purulia Chhau and Seraikela Chhau make use of masks during performance. The Purulia Chhau masks are elaborate and dramatic whereas the Seraikela Chhau masks are more earthy and soft.
