Kalayaripayattu or Kalayari is an Indian form of martial art that originates in modern-day Kerala and dates back to the 3rd century BCE. Kalayari training always starts with an oil massage of the body which helps in making the artist supple and agile. Followed by teaching basic moves such as chaattom (jumping), ottam (running), marichil (somersault), adi (strike), idi (punch), thada (defense) and payattu (assault). After mastering the basic skills of Kalayari the students are then given lessons on using weapons such as daggers, swords, bow and arrow, spears and maces. Kalaripayattu trains on the philosophy of the absolute coordination of the mind and body.
